2022 Cheez-It Bowl Preview: Oklahoma Sooners vs. No. 13 Florida State Seminoles

There might be only six days left of bowl games but there’s plenty of action left including the 2022 Cheez-It Bowl in Orlando, Florida when the No. 13 Florida State Seminoles (9-3) take on the Oklahoma Sooners (6-6) December 29th at 5:30 PM EST on ESPN. The Sooners have struggled all year but became bowl-eligible back on November 19th with a 28-13 win over in-state rival Oklahoma State. The Sooners have lost 3 out of their last four.

Oklahoma likes to run an up-tempo offense but they face a strong Seminoles defense that’s only allowed 19.7 points a game. The Sooners are down two starting offensive linemen (Anton Harrison and Wanya Morris) and their leading rusher (Eric Gray). Gray has 213 attempts for 1,366 yards and 11 touchdowns. Jovantae Barnes and QB Dillon Gabriel will look to carry the load for Oklahoma. Barnes has 411 yards and four touchdowns while Gabriel has 298 yards and five touchdowns.

Gabriel has completed 63% of his passes for 2,925 yards and 24 touchdowns. His favorite target this year has been Marvin Mims Jr. Mims has 52 receptions for 1,006 yards and six touchdowns.

The defense has been an issue all season for the Sooners as they’ve surrendered 29.6 points a game and allowed 450.5 yards.

The Seminoles are on a five-game winning streak. Their three losses all came to ranked teams. QB Jordan Travis leads the offensive attack for Florida State. He’s thrown for 2,796 yards and 22 touchdowns. He has a trio of RBs that have put up good numbers. Trey Benson (141 ATT, 965 yards, 9 TDs), TreshaunWard (85 ATT, 547 yards, 5 TDS), and Lawrance Toafili (92 ATT, 447 yards, and 5 TDs).

The receiving core has four players with 20-plus catches. Mycah Pittman (29), Ontaria Wilson (25), RB Toafili (23), and TE Camren McDonald (21). The leading WR is Johnny Wilson with 35 receptions for 695 yards and three scores.

The Seminoles defense is led by DL Jared Verse with 7.5 sacks.
