Hurricanes Mistakes Hurt Them in 27-21 Loss to Georgia Tech

Written by Darrell Wilkinson

The Miami Hurricanes lose their fourth straight game in a row with a 27 to 21 defeat to Georgia Tech in a game where Miami’s mistakes held them back. Three key turnovers for the ‘Canes and great execution from TaQuon Marshall and Tech led to this result.

With N’Kosi Perry starting at quarterback for the ‘Canes things seemed promising early on as Miami took their opening drive 75 yards on 11 plays with DeeJay Dallas taking the ball out of the wildcat for the score. Georgia Tech would quickly answer with an 11 play drive of their own finished off by Yellow Jackets quarterback TaQuon Marshall who scrambled 28 yards for the score. This drive was extended by the first of many Miami mistakes that would haunt them in this game, this time a penalty by Gerald Willis to give Tech a fourth and short opportunity that they would convert.

The mistakes piled on as on the ensuing kickoff DeeJay Dallas fumbled after a few nice cuts and the Yellow Jackets pounced on the ball to set themselves up at the Miami 23. Again TaQuon Marshall who had an incredible night took it in for the score to punish Miami’s turnover and put GT up by seven. Marshall finished the night with 92 yards on the ground and 73 yards through the air on three completions and totaled three touchdowns and led the offense all evening in a commanding fashion.

The Hurricanes three turnovers costed them 13 points through a touchdown and two field goals. Miami’s defense did well to contain the triple option attack when they could and held Georgia Tech below their average but penalties on the offensive side of the ball really hurt any chances of Miami answering. Miami’s offensive line was called for five separate infractions that put their team behind the sticks and put Perry in situations where he had lower chances of success. Miami has lost its identity and needs to find it to become bowl eligible.

Of the few bright spots for Miami:

  • Jack Spicer hit a nice Rugby style punt that caused a turnover as it hit a Yellow Jackets player in the hand.
  • N’Kosi Perry led Miami on a 15 play 95 yard drive deep in the fourth quarter to make it a game.
  • Freshman running back Camron Davis looks promising and had 48 yards on six carries and recorded his first career collegiate touchdown.

Miami falls to 5-5 on the season while Georgia Tech becomes Bowl eligible at 6-4. Miami looks to also become bowl eligible as they travel to Virginia Tech next weekend while the Yellow Jackets host Virginia.
