Army Grinds Out 31-13 Win Over UAB, Improves to 2-3

By Garin Turner

The Army Black Knights (2-3) returned to the win column on Saturday with a 31-13 victory over the UAB Blazers, leaning on their signature ground attack to take control in the second half.

How it happened

The game started slowly, with UAB missing a field goal attempt in the first quarter. Army then delivered a vintage drive — 18 plays, 74 yards, chewing 10:34 off the clock — capped by a three-yard touchdown run from Hayden Reed early in the second quarter.

UAB responded with a touchdown to even the score, but Army regained the lead before halftime on a short field goal to make it 10-7 at the break.

The Black Knights began to separate in the third quarter. After UAB missed another field goal, Cale Hellums powered in from five yards out. Later, UAB turned it over on downs and then tossed an interception to end the quarter, setting up Army to extend its lead.

Hellums added two more touchdowns in the fourth — a one-yard plunge and another five-yard run — to push the margin to 31-7. UAB managed one more score late, but the outcome was never in doubt.
