Buffaloes Host Horned Frogs in Season Opener

The 2022 college football season continues tonight with a slate of games, including the TCU Horned Frogs traveling to take on the Colorado Buffaloes at 10 PM EST on ESPN tonight. This is Sonny Dykes first game as the head coach for the Horned Frogs after being hired away from SMU to replace Gary Patterson. At SMU, Dykes is 71-63 in his career. This is the first meeting between the two schools.

Both teams have a pair of quarterbacks that could start tonight. For the Horned Frogs, there’s Max Duggan and Chandler Morris. Duggan has started 29 games in three seasons, while Morris started two games last year when Duggan was out with a fractured foot. Last year Duggan threw for 2,048 yards and 16 touchdowns and added 516 yards on the ground on 105 attempts and three scores. Morris threw for 717 yards and 3 TDs. TCU finished 5-7 last year but did have a victory over #12 Baylor at the time, 30-28.

For Colorado, either Brendon Lewis or J.T. Shrout will start. Shrout missed all of last year with a knee injury. Last year, Lewis threw for 1,540 yards and 10 TDs. Safety Mark Perry played for the Buffaloes for the previous three years, now suits up tonight as a Horned Frog after transferring. He led his former team in interceptions last year with three. Colorado will look to Alex Fontenot to carry the load at running back after Jarek Broussard transferred to Michigan State.

Colorado head coach Karl Dorrell enters his third season with the team. He’s 8-10 (43-37 overall). Last year, the Buffaloes went 4-8. This is Colorado’s first opener against a Power Five non-conference opponent since 1996.
