College Football Playoff Announces Penultimate Ranking

College Football Playoff (CFP) Selection Committee began its weekly rankings for the 2020-2021 Bowl season on November 17th, 2020. Each week committee members have ranked the top college teams, announcing them on ESPN’s College Football Playoff: Top 25 show, and this week was no exception.

This week, the committee announced their second to last week rankings with Alabama taking the top spot, Notre Dame 2nd, Clemson 3rd and Ohio State rounding out the top four.

With twelve of the twenty-five ranked teams not playing this weekend due to Covid-19 concerns, the effects that the pandemic has had on the rankings was also discussed.

“The committee has talked a lot about in 2020 it’s a vexing problem to try to compare teams that have played 10 or 11 games to those that have played five or six, and that certainly has been the case,” said Gary Barta, the CFP Selection Committee Chair. “But in my opinion, the committee has done a very good job of working through that. At the end of the day, our job is to rank the top 25 teams in the country based on the schedule they play, and that’s what we do every week, and no matter who plays, the committee studies the games and spends a considerable amount of time talking through every week.”

The final rankings were originally scheduled to be released Sunday, December 6th but had to be rescheduled to Sunday, December 20th, as a result of conferences having changed the dates of their championship games.

The top four teams selected will participate in the Playoff Semifinals on Friday, January 1st, in the Rose Bowl Game and the Allstate Sugar Bowl. The national championship game will be played Monday, January 11th, at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla. The committee will also announce the matchups for the Goodyear Cotton Bowl, PlayStation Fiesta Bowl, and Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl on Dec. 20th.
