It’s been twelve years since the cancellation of Deadwood the critically acclaimed tv series, and we will finally get some closure coming May 31st. Deadwood was a period piece show that took place in the Wild West where, for the most part, a lawless township, is forced to join the rest of the growing United States.
The three-season, 36-episode show had a great run between 2004 to 2006. During this series without spoiling anything for the people who may want to start binge-watching the series before the debut of DEADWOOD: The Movie. Basically, the township of Deadwood is ruled by Al Swearengen played by Ian McShane. Trouble is always brewing in the township and as the United States Army is moving the Native American people to their reservations.
The issues begin when which state should take control of the township, with the gold rush playing a role in the intensity of the fight. In the Movie, the characters on the show are reunited to celebrate South Dakota’s statehood. Meanwhile, old rivalries are brought back to light while other alliances are put to the test.
Old wounds are reopened, which could cause some significant issues to the major characters like Sheriff Bullock played by Timothy Olyphant. The changes coming to Deadwood will leave many with a rough and tremulous time ahead with the modern times quickly approaching.
As a fan of the show, I have been waiting 15 years for some closure since the show was canceled back in 2006. I have high hopes that this will be what we all need to finally feel like we get the ending that we all deserve. Over its three-season, 36 episode run on HBO “Deadwood” was nominated for 28 Primetime Emmy Awards, of which they won eight. Including Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series. To add to the honors, Ian McShane, received a Golden Globe Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a TV series for his role as Al Swearengen.
The premiere of Deadwood: The Movie is set for Friday, May 31st at 8:00 PM EST on HBO. Hopefully, this will be what we all wanted and needed to conclude the series. I won’t lie I will be glued to my TV with the highest of hopes that this Deadwood movie will bring us all the closure we the fans and the need to feel like the show and the actors deserved!
