CHARLOTTE — The ACC Championship delivered chaos, drama, and a postseason curveball no one saw coming. Duke toppled No. 17 Virginia 26–20 in overtime on Saturday night, handing the Cavaliers their third loss of the season and sending the College Football Playoff selection committee into full scramble mode.

The win lifts Duke to 8–5, securing the program’s first ACC title since 1989, while Virginia falls to 10–3 and is officially eliminated from playoff contention.

How It Happened

Duke wasted no time setting the tone. The Blue Devils opened the game with a patient, methodical 15-play, 75-yard march that ended with Darian Mensah finding Jeremiah Hasley on a 12-yard touchdown strike.

Virginia tried to answer but missed a 45-yard field goal on its first drive. Duke had a chance to extend the lead, but Mensah misfired two plays later, throwing an interception that briefly swung momentum back toward the Cavaliers.

The second quarter finally brought Virginia to life. Quarterback Chandler Morris capped a steady drive with an 11-yard touchdown pass to J’Mari Taylor, tying the game 7–7. But Duke responded immediately. Nate Sheppard burst through the left side for a 16-yard touchdown, restoring a seven-point lead that held into halftime after a flurry of punts.

A Fourth-Quarter Rally

Virginia opened the second half with a 24-yard field goal to pull within 14–10, only for Duke to match it on the next possession for a 17–10 lead entering the fourth quarter.

The final period brought the kind of nervous, mistake-filled football typical of championship tension. Virginia turned the ball over on downs. Duke stalled and punted. Morris threw his second interception of the night. Both teams traded field goals as Duke clung to a 20–13 advantage.

Then came the moment that kept Virginia alive.

With just over two minutes left, the Cavaliers took over at their own 4-yard line. Morris engineered a brilliant 96-yard, 10-play drive, capping it with an 18-yard touchdown pass to Eli Wood to tie the game with 22 seconds remaining.

Overtime was needed — but Virginia’s magic ran out quickly.

Overtime

On Duke’s first possession, Mensah once again found Hasley, this time for a 1-yard score — the duo’s second touchdown connection of the night.

Virginia never answered. On the first play of their overtime possession, Morris was intercepted, sealing the upset and sending Duke players pouring onto the field in celebration.

What’s Next

The Duke upset sends the ACC into postseason limbo.

With Virginia eliminated from playoff contention, the committee must now evaluate an unusual scenario:
•    Does 10-2 Miami get the ACC’s playoff push despite not reaching the title game?
•    Does the chaos open a door for two Group of Five teams such as Tulane and James Madison?
•    Does an extra SEC or Big Ten team slip into the at-large mix?

For Virginia, the waiting game begins. The Cavaliers will learn their bowl destination Sunday afternoon or evening.

Duke, meanwhile, walks away as one of Championship Weekend’s most disruptive forces — and the reason the playoff conversation just got a lot more complicated.
