Final Four Preview: Purdue vs. NC State – A Clash of Titans at State Farm Stadium

GLENDALE, AZ- As the NCAA basketball season approaches its climax, the stage is set for an electrifying Final Four showdown between the Purdue Boilermakers and the NC State Wolfpack. This pivotal match-up is scheduled for 6:09 PM Eastern time at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, promising a spectacle filled with intense basketball action.

Purdue Boilermakers: Chasing the First Title

The Purdue Boilermakers have had a stellar season, setting a school record with their 33rd win after defeating Tennessee in the Elite Eight. This marks their third Final Four appearance, with previous visits in 1969 and 1980. The last time Purdue made it to the National Championship game was in 1969, and they are eager to claim their first national title. This season also marks the first time the Boilermakers have played in April, showing just how unique and groundbreaking their journey has been.

Purdue’s strength this season has been their formidable offensive rebounding, a fact highlighted by head coach Matt Painter. “I think we are a great offensive rebounding team, so our problem is if we turn the ball over. I don’t think it’s our problem if we miss shots as much… I think we’re 27-0 with 13 turnovers or less,” Painter noted, emphasizing the critical role that maintaining possession plays in their game plan.

NC State Wolfpack: Reliving the Glory

For NC State, this Final Four appearance is a nostalgic return to prominence, the first since their fairy-tale championship win in 1983. The Wolfpack have showcased a formidable defense throughout the tournament, particularly in Dallas where they held Duke and Marquette to a combined 32.8% shooting. Their star player, DJ Burns, emerged as a standout performer, scoring a season-high 29 points against Duke in the Elite Eight.

Head coach Kevin Keatts expressed his excitement and anticipation for the upcoming game. “Our guys, we’re excited about the opportunity… There’s only four teams left in the entire country, and we’re one of those teams. Looking forward to the opportunity to play against a really good Purdue team,” Keatts said.

Historical Match-up

This game will be the seventh meeting between Purdue and NC State, with the Wolfpack historically leading the series 4-2. However, Purdue has won the last two encounters, including an 82-72 overtime victory at Barclays Center in 2021. NC State’s journey as the 5th 11 seed in the Final Four adds an extra layer of intrigue and underdog spirit to their campaign.

What to Expect

As tip-off approaches, fans can expect a thrilling contest between two well-coached teams with contrasting strengths. Purdue’s ability to dominate the boards and minimize turnovers will be key to their success, while NC State’s tough defense and high-performing stars like DJ Burns could tilt the game in their favor. However, the Boilers have the two-time AP-Player of the year in Zach Edey. This matchup is not just a test of skill but also of will, as both teams vie for a spot in the national championship.

As the excitement builds, all eyes will be on State Farm Stadium for what promises to be a memorable battle in NCAA basketball history.
