Georgia Overpowers Alabama 28–7 to Capture SEC Championship

By Garin Turner

ATLANTA — Georgia didn’t just avenge its lone loss of the season — it reclaimed its identity. The No. 3 Bulldogs put together one of their most complete performances of the year Saturday night, beating No. 9 Alabama 28–7 in the SEC Championship and stamping their ticket to the College Football Playoff.

Quarterback Gunner Stockton played with poise beyond his years, throwing three touchdowns, while running back Nate Frazier added another score as Georgia controlled the game from the second quarter on. Alabama never found its footing offensively, finishing with minus-three rushing yards on 16 attempts — a staggering statistic that defined the night.

How the Game Unfolded

The opening quarter featured both teams trading punts, each testing the other’s front seven. But the tone shifted late in the first when Stockton led Georgia on a measured, mistake-free drive capped by a one-yard touchdown pass to Roderick Robinson II.

Moments later, Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson forced a throw into traffic. Georgia defensive back Daylen Everette jumped the route and returned the interception 34 yards, instantly flipping momentum. The Bulldogs didn’t waste it.

Early in the second quarter, Stockton delivered again — a five-yard strike to Dillon Bell — pushing Georgia in front 14–0. From there, the Bulldogs leaned on their defense and field position, forcing Alabama into long drives with little rhythm.

Third Quarter: Georgia Tightens Its Grip

While both teams exchanged punts throughout much of the third, Georgia finally broke through with a bruising drive finished off by Frazier’s nine-yard touchdown run. Alabama’s offense continued to sputter, failing to create space up front and repeatedly falling behind the sticks.

Alabama Shows Life, but Georgia Closes the Door

Alabama finally pieced together a clean drive to open the fourth quarter, marching 91 yards before Simpson connected with Germie Bernard on a 23-yard touchdown. Down 21–7, the Crimson Tide had a chance to make it interesting, but Georgia’s defense slammed it shut.

Two Alabama drives ended on downs, and Stockton delivered the knockout punch — a crisp 13-yard touchdown to Zachariah Branch, sealing a dominant SEC Championship victory for the Bulldogs.

What’s Next

Georgia is officially playoff-bound. Whether the Bulldogs earn the No. 2 seed will hinge on how the committee ranks their win compared to the Big Ten and Big 12 champions.

Alabama, now with three losses and no signature closing statement, enters an uncertain wait. The Tide will look toward their bowl destination as their postseason fate rests in the hands of the CFP committee.
