The #16 Miami Hurricanes opened up their season with a 70-13 trashing over Bethune-Cookman Wildcats. The Hurricanes ran for 305 yards on 42 carries and seven TDs. Henry Parrish Jr. rushed 14 times for 108 yards and three scores. Thaddius Franklin Jr. added 78 yards on nine carries and two scores. Terrell Walden II and Devon Perry each added a score.
The passing game was just as solid with QBs Tyler Van Dyke and Jake Garcia throwing for 281 yards combined. Van Dyke tossed two touchdowns, while Garcia was 7/7 passing for 88 yards. The turnover chain might be gone, but the defense currently stepped up in this one forcing three Wildcats interceptions. The Hurricanes were a perfect 7 for 7 on third downs.
After taking a 14-3 lead into the second quarter, the Hurricanes scored four touchdowns in the second quarter, and the route was on. Parrish Jr. was the first to score in the second quarter on a six-yard run. Gilbert Frierson then scored on a 32-yard pick-six. The Wildcats scored their only touchdown of the game on a 34-yard pass from Jalon Jones to Que’shaun Byrd. The Hurricanes responded by scoring twice more before the half. A 16-yard pass from Van Dyke to Xavier Restrepo and Parrish Jr’s second score, a five-yard run.
In the third, Van Dyke connected on a 16-yard pass to Michael Redding III to bring the score to 42-13. Franklin Jr scored on a five-yard run with 2:42 left in the third. The fourth saw Perry score on a four-yard run and finally Walden II on a two-yard run.
Next up for the #16 Miami Hurricanes (1-0) is their second straight home game, this time against the Southern Miss Golden Eagles (0-1) on September 10th.
Bethune-Cookman (0-1) is on the road again next week against South Carolina State (0-1) on September 10th.
