Champaign, Ill. – Anthony Higgs has signed a Big Ten Tender of Financial Aid with the University of Illinois and will join the Fighting Illini program at the start of fall semester.

Higgs is a 6-foot-8 frontcourt player from Baltimore. He is a two-time state champion, helping lead Perry Hall High School to back-to-back Maryland Class 4A titles in 2017 and 2018. He averaged 10.5 points, 8.0 rebounds and 4.0 blocks during the 2018 state semifinal and final rounds, helping Perry Hall successfully defend its title.

Higgs was a second-team All-Metro selection by the Baltimore Sun this past season. He earned first-team All-Metro accolades and second-team All-USA Maryland honors during his junior campaign when he averaged 15.7 points, 8.8 rebounds and 1.9 blocks on the year.

“Anthony is a versatile forward with the ability to play multiple positions in our system,” Illinois Head Coach Brad Underwood said. “He is a long, athletic lefty who can play inside or step out and face the basket, and he is a strong rebounder. Most importantly he is a winner, as evidenced by being a two-time state champ in Maryland, a place known for tremendous high school basketball.”

Higgs was coached by George Panageotou at Perry Hall and played AAU with Team Melo. He is the first Illini recruit from the city of Baltimore since guard Chester Frazier (2006-09).

Higgs joins freshmen Ayo Dosunmu, Tevian Jones, Alan Griffin, Giorgi Bezhanishvili and Samba Kane and junior Andres Feliz in the 2018 Fighting Illini recruiting class.
