Jameis Winston will be suspended for the first half of this Saturday’s ACC matchup between Florida State and Clemson for yelling an “offensive and vulgar” phrase on campus on Tuesday.
The suspension was announced on Wednesday through a joint statement from the FSU athletic director and the interim president.
“As a result of his comments yesterday, which were offensive and vulgar, Jameis Winston will undergo internal discipline and will be withheld from competition for the first half of the Clemson game.” said FSU interim president Dr. Garnett Stokes and athletic director Stan Wilcox in the statement. “The University and athletics department will have no further comment on the matter.”
Deadspin (http://deadsp.in/XdGkLw) compiled a series of tweets from students on campus yesterday, where they describe the Heisman Trophy winner standing on a table and yelling “**** her right in the *****,” which is a popular phrase from a parody news reel, as well as a meme.
Seminoles head coach Jimbo Fisher wasn’t happy with his star quarterbacks comments, as he was bombarded with questions about the situation during his weekly ACC teleconference on Wednesday.
“It was not a good decision,” said Fisher of the incident during the teleconference. “You can’t make certain statements that are derogatory or inflammatory to any person, race or gender. You have to understand that.”
Winston’s timing couldn’t be worse for FSU, as Clemson is a division rivals who will look to upset the ‘Noles at home after the Tigers were blown out 51-14 last year in Memorial Stadium.
Top-ranked FSU takes on No. 22 Clemson this Saturday at 8 p.m. on ABC, and the ‘Noles will have to rely on backup quarterback Sean Maguire for the first half, while Winston serves his suspension.
Maguire received some playing time in Week 2 against The Citadel, as he went 3-5 passing for 28 yards in his only action of the season. Last season Maguire went 13-21 for 116 yards and threw a pair of touchdowns to go along with two interceptions.
