Malik Willis’ 272 yards of total offense and two TD’s led the Liberty Flames to a 48-7 victory over Campbell to start the 2021 season Saturday night.
Willis got things going early for the Flames with a 35-yard TD pass to Demario Douglas on their first drive of the game. Willis would end the first half the same way he started, this time, though, he did it on the ground with a 12 yard TD run as the Flames went into the locker room with a 20-7 lead over the Fighting Camels.
The Flames QB wasn’t hoarding all the fun, though. The ground game for Liberty saw six different ball carriers take 41 carries a combined 218 yards on the night. Leading that ground attack was Joshua Mack, who had 19 of those carries and 60 yards on the ground, along with a TD, which came on the Flames’ first drive of the second half, extending their lead at 27-7.
Shedro Louis would add another 3rd quarter TD for the Flames on the ground with a 36-yard score to make it 34-7. Louis finished the game with three carries for 46 yards.
In the fourth quarter, the Flames switched quarterbacks to get their backup Johnathan Bennett some field time. He would lead Liberty on two consecutive scoring drives. The first one was an eight-play 65-yard drive, capped off on a 27-yard TD pass to Jaivian Lofton. Bennett would then close out the game with a ten-play 59-yard drive, where he would score the game’s final TD on a 2-yard TD run to make it 48-7.
Liberty ended the game with 537 yards of total offense, so they have a lot to be happy about. An area of concern for the Flames moving forward, however, could be their penalties. They finished the night with 12 penalties for 98 yards.
