Martin Truex Jr. Secures Championship Four Spot With Martinsville Win

RIDGEWAY, Va. –– Martin Truex, Jr. thrashed the field on Sunday afternoon leading a staggering 464 laps en route to his first career Martinsville victory and his seventh win of the season. Truex took the lead on a yellow-flag pit stop sequence early in the race and remained in control throughout the remainder of the event.

With the win, Truex assures himself a berth in next month’s Championship Four in the season finale at Homestead. “Big day. Big win. Homestead is a bonus”, Truex said.

“We’ve been working on getting a Martinsville win for a long time, it’s one everyone wants to win at with the history here.” Truex added that his incident with Joey Logano a year ago was frustrating to him not because he missed a chance to lock himself into Homestead, but because he wanted to win at the half-mile paperclip-shaped track so badly.

While Truex was celebrating, a fracas occurred on pit road between playoff drivers Denny Hamlin and Joey Logano. Logano shoved Hamlin as he was walking away from discussing an on-track incident during the race. Truex mentioned that he was glad he won and wasn’t involved in any extra-curricular activities post-race.

Tempers have been known to flare in this event over the past few seasons and next year’s edition of this event will be no exception as it becomes the penultimate race of the NASCAR Cup Series season.

Truex’s teammate Kyle Busch sustained damage to his No. 18 Camry during contact with the No. 10 Ford Mustang of Aric Almirola. He fell to third in the playoff standings following today’s race.

William Byron was able to secure his career-best finish following his runner-up effort. Byron was able to keep up with Truex during the early part of the run, but the speed of the No. 19 of Truex was too much for Byron to overcome. The result, however, is a promising sign heading into Byron’s third season of his career next year.

The Round of 8 continues this coming weekend as NASCAR’s elite descend on Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth, Texas.
