Maryland Terrapins 1-0 vs. Northern Illinois Huskies 1-0 Preview

It’s a week two matchup tonight between the Maryland Terrapins (1-0) welcoming the Northern Illinois Huskies in a Big Ten vs. MAC showdown. Maryland is coming off a 39-7 win over Florida Atlantic, while NIU got past Holy Cross 19-17. The game is at 7:30 EST tonight on BTN.

The Terrapins forced six interceptions last week and will look to duplicate that against a Huskie team that did throw a pick last week. NIU leaned on its running game, rushing 48 times for 178 yards and a score. In addition to the six turnovers, Maryland had three sacks in the game.

 

Junior Linebacker Daniel Wingate had 10 tackles (nine solo and one tackle for a loss) and a pick-six interception to lead the Terrapins. Sophomore Defensive Back Kevyn Humes and Freshman Linebacker Carlton Smith both had eight tackles for Maryland. Dontay Joyner, Ricardo Cooper Jr., Lavain Scruggs, Braydon Lee, and La’khi Roland each had an interception.

 

Offensively, Maryland was led by Freshman Quarterback Malik Washington, who went 27/43 for 258 yards and three touchdowns. Shaleak Knotts, Kaleb Webb, and Dorian Fleming caught the touchdowns.

 

Maryland will have to do a better job with penalties, committing 14 for 100 yards. NIU was led by two running backs, Chavon Wright (11 carries for 77 yards and a touchdown), and Telly Johnson Jr. (21 carries for 67 yards).

 

Defensively, NIU Senior Linebacker Quinn Urwiler had 10 tackles (five solo, one for a loss) and a half sack. Senior Safety Muhammed Jammeh added seven tackles (four solo), a pass breakup, and an interception.

 

Next game

Maryland welcomes Townson on Sept. 13.

Northern Illinois travels to face Mississippi State on Sept. 20.
