The 12th ranked North Carolina Tar Heels moved to 2-0 after holding off Boston College Eagles 26-22 in ACC play. The Tar Heels never trailed in the game, but the Eagles kept it close throughout.
North Carolina went up 7-0 after a 12 play, 83-yard drive when Sam Howell completed a 24-yard pass to Khafre Brown. The Eagles managed two field goals in-between a one-yard score by Javonte Williams. After an interception, the Eagles scored on a five-yard pass from Phil Jurkovec to David Bailey to narrow the Tar Heels lead to 14-13.
The Tar Heels would score another touchdown as Howell found Williams for a 41-yard score. The Eagles added another field goal to bring the score to 21-16 at the half. Both defenses held their own in the second half, both teams punting a combined five times.
North Carolina extended its lead to 24-16 on a 35-yard field goal by Grayson Atkins, who later missed a 47 yarder. After the miss, the Eagles would score on a six-yard pass from Jurkovec to CJ Lewis. Boston College went for two, but Trey Morrison intercepted the pass and scored for two points for the Tar Heels.
The Tar Heels held the Eagles to 40 yards rushing. Both teams had issues with penalties. The Tar Heels had 10 for 96 yards while the Eagles had 12 for 110.
Howell finished 14 of 26 for 225 yards and two touchdowns and the interception. Williams had a big day carrying the ball 11 times for 57 yards and a score while adding two receptions for 56 yards and a score. Michael Carter had 16 carries for 121 yards.
For the Eagles, Jurkovec went 37 of 56 for 313 yards and two touchdowns. Bailey’s only catch was the touchdown while Lewis finished with three receptions for 45 yards and the score.
The Tar Heels return home next week to take on the Virginia Tech Hokies.
