Ohio State and Washington Matchup in Rose Bowl Game

Written by Robert Henry

Los Angeles, CA – On January 1st, 2019 the Ohio State Buckeyes will host the Washington Huskies at the 105th Rose Bowl Game Presented by Northwestern Mutual. The Rose Bowl is a huge bowl game for the PAC-12 and Big 10. Both Ohio State and Washington have battled their way through the regular season to end up at “The Granddaddy of Them All”, the Rose Bowl.   The history behind this game dates back to 1902 and this bowl game started the New Years Day bowl game trend that we still see to this day. This is Ohio State’s head coach, Urban Meyer last game as he is retiring after this season. Coach Meyer has had a fruitful career as a head coach and from what he was saying he plans to continue his career with teaching at Ohio State. Washington head coach Chris Petersen is happy he and his team were able to come out on top of the PAC-12 and make it to the Rose Bowl Game. Petersen stated that he grew up watching this bowl game and just being able to be at the Rose Bowl Game is an accomplishment. Both teams will be battling for the Rose Bowl Trophy and both teams and head coaches are dying to lift that trophy over head as the winners.

Ohio State is returning to the Rose Bowl Game for the first time since 2010. The Buckeyes are going into this game as the favorites to win but they are not favored by much. This could mean we are in for another amazing Rose Bowl Game like we have had the last two years. Head coach Meyer will be looking to his starting quarterback Dwayne Haskins to set the pace and keep the Buckeyes on top. The biggest challenge for Ohio State will be the Washington defense. Haskins will need J.K. Dobbins and Mike Weber to take a decent amount of carries in order to open up the Washington secondary. If the Buckeyes can succeed in doing this, it will make things significantly more difficult for the Huskies on defense.

The Washington Huskies will be looking for an explosive performance from starting quarterback Jake Browning and running back Myles Gaskin. The Browning and Gaskin combo can operate at a high level but unfortunately they were not able to create that explosive performance on a consistent basis during the regular season. This should not be an issue for the Huskies as they have had plenty of experience playing in the New Year days bowl games. Coach Petersen just has to give his squad the right plays and we could see an upset in this years edition of the Rose Bowl. Also the Buckeyes will have to keep Washington line backer Ben Burr-Kirven at bay in order to secure the victory, which will not be an easy feat to do. Burr-Kirven is just one of the players that we could see being drafted to the NFL next year due to his performance at Washington.

The Washington Huskies may be considered the under dog but the difference between the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Washington Huskies is not that big of a margin. If both teams come out playing the best game that they can play we will see another intense Rose Bowl Game. Ohio State has a lot to lose here as I’m sure all the players are wanting to send coach Meyer off with a bowl game victory before he retires. On the other side the Washington Huskies will be wanting to treat their head coach with a memorable win over such a great BIG 10 team. Both coaches are looking at a tough battle and it will be interesting to see who will make it in the end and lift that Rose Bowl Trophy up and take home the win.
