Orlando Apollos Outduel San Antonio Commanders in Week Two of AAF Action

In only its second week of play, The Alliance of American Football could already have its potential game of the year as the Orlando Apollos (2-0) defeated the San Antonio Commanders (1-1) 37-29 in San Antonio.

 

The Commanders had a 12-0 lead after the first quarter. The first score came on a 15-yard run by Kenneth Farrow II. Quarterback Logan Woodside completed a one-yard touchdown to Evan Rodriguez.

 

The Apollos answered in the second quarter when running back De’Veon Smith punched it in from a yard out to cut the lead to 12-8. Orlando added another touchdown when quarterback Garrett Gilbert connected for a 21-yard score to receiver Charles Johnson. The Apollos also kicked a field goal while San Antonio connected on two field goals. The halftime score saw the Commanders up 18-17.

 

The Apollos only managed a field goal in the third quarter. San Antonio scored 11 and took a 29-20 lead into the fourth quarter. The Apollos responded by scoring 17 unanswered points in the fourth quarter.

 

After a 47-yard field goal, the Apollos scored on a 23-yard pass from Thomson to Jalin Marshall. The defense got into the scoring column when Keith Reaser had a 38-yard pick six.

 

For the Apollos, Gilbert had completions of 57, 54, and 45 yards in the second quarter en route to 393 passing yards and two touchdowns. D’Ernest Johnson had 57 yards on eight carries and Charles Johnson led the Apollos receivers with 192 yards and seven receptions.

 

Woodside finished 20 for 39 for 223 yards and a touchdown but did throw the pick six for the Commanders. Farrow II finished the day with 74 yards on 13 carries and a score.

 

Orlando returns home next week to take on the Memphis Express.

 

San Antonio will travel to face the San Diego Fleet. These two teams met in week one with San Antonio winning 15-6.
