The 2019 college football season is off to a good start for the 12th ranked Texas A&M Aggies as they routed their in-state counterpart Texas State 41-7.
Quarterback Kellen Mond had three touchdown passes and ran for another all before the fourth quarter to led the way for the Aggies on Thursday night. Mond went 19/27 for 194 yards.
The first touchdown of the year came when Mond completed a pass to wide receiver Quartney Davis for 21 yards with 7:44 left in the first quarter. After an interception by Leon O’Neal Jr., the Aggies scored again when running back Jashaun Corbin punched it in from a yard out bringing the score to 14-0.
Corbin finished the day with 22 carries for 103 yards. Fellow running back Isaiah Spiller ran seven times for 106 yards with most of that coming on an 85-yard run. Corbin also caught a touchdown pass.
Davis finished the day with six catches for 85 yards and the touchdown. At halftime, the Aggies were up 28-0. Texas Tech lone score came with just 36 seconds left in the game when quarterback Gresch Jensen found receiver Trevis Graham Jr. for 27 yards.
This is the sixth consecutive game that the Aggies have topped 400 yards or more of total offense. The Aggies are on a five-game winning streak which is the longest active streak in the SEC.
The Aggies defense held Texas Tech to 219 total yards and forced four interceptions. They held them to only eight yards on the ground while the Aggies ran for 246. Defensive Back Miles Jones had two of the four interceptions for the Aggies. It was the most interceptions by the team in a game since 2006 against Texas.
Buddy Johnson had seven tackles for Texas A&M including 1.5 for a loss. Roney Elam, Tyree Wilson, and Jayden Peevy all had a sack for Texas A&M.
Things will be more stringent as the Aggies will take on the reigning National Champion and top-ranked Clemson Tigers on September 7th in Death Valley.
