The Seminoles Begin Their Road to Bowl Eligibility Against Delaware State

With only three games remaining, Florida State (3-6, 3-5 ACC), looks to close the season out strong. Sitting at 3-6, it would be easy for the Seminoles just to pack it up and go home. FSU, on the other hand, have pride, and a 36-year bowl streak to fight for. This wasn’t the type of playoff scenario Florida State was hoping for, but they must win out to gain bowl eligibility. Delaware State (2-8, 2-6 MEAC) makes the trip to Tallahassee as the first team in Florida State’s push for bowl eligibility.

The loss of Deondre Francois against Alabama put a Florida State with high expectation behind the eight ball. Even with losing their starting quarterback for the year the ‘Noles have been in position to win games under true freshman quarterback James Blackman.

Coach Fisher has confidence in the play his young quarterback.

“He’s making good decisions, and he made some mistakes” Said Fisher. “But for a true freshman, he had us in position to have a chance to win the football game.”

Blackman has shown the ability to make plays, and in some instances looked very good. In the same breath, he seems to hold on to the ball too long at times. The freshman loves pushing the ball downfield, ranked 45th nationally, Blackman averages over 12 yards per completion. His decision making though, has been hit or miss. He’ll take his shot when needed and then turn around and launch a pass that makes you say “What were you thinking?”

Fisher would like to know what he’s thinking at times. So, when Coach Fisher looks animated while talking to his young quarterback it all serves a purpose.

“Thought process” said Fisher. “You got to have a thought process, you have to be instinctive, but you have to stay disciplined in that instinct…. I’m trying to get him to verbalize what he was thinking, what he saw, exactly when he comes off the field. Because I think that’s the critical point in teaching.”

Last week against Clemson the ‘Noles missed ample opportunities be it a fumble that they failed to jump on or Blackman missing his receivers by just an inch. It’s just been that type of season for Florida State where they can’t seem to make important plays when needed.

“Just relax and make the play when we have to. Whether it’s offense, defense, special teams we just can’t seem to make that play when we need to make it.” Said Fisher on the missed opportunities.

Coach Fisher knows what’s on the line, and so do his players. Though some may say it’s only Delaware State there’s still no room for error and Fisher has a message for his team.

“Go out and play your tails off just like you played against Clemson. I mean go out and play just like you did against Syracuse with the same enthusiasm and heart, except with better execution.”

Delaware State has a chance to keep the Seminoles from going to a bowl game this year. So, all hands must be on deck, and the players have to execute the game plan in order to keep the dream alive. Kickoff is noon EST at Doak Campbell Stadium.
