Washington State (2-2) looks to regroup on Saturday night when they host Colorado State (1-2). Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. EST on CBSSN.
Season Recap
The Cougars opened the season on the right track, edging Idaho 13-10 before rolling past San Diego State 36-13. But the last two weeks have been tough. Washington State was overwhelmed in a 59-10 loss to North Texas and then gave up 59 more points in a rivalry defeat against Washington, falling 59-24. The defense, once a strength, has been tested heavily in back-to-back blowouts.
By the Numbers
Offense:
• Total Offense: 296.5 yards per game (125th in FBS)
• Passing: 238.3 yards per game (65th)
• Rushing: 58.3 yards per game (135th)
• Scoring: 20.8 points per game (108th)
Defense:
• Total Defense: 329.3 yards allowed per game (54th)
• Passing: 177.8 yards allowed per game (38th)
• Rushing: 151.5 yards allowed per game (78th)
• Scoring: 35.3 points allowed per game (126th)
The numbers tell the story: the Cougars are struggling to find balance on offense, relying too much on the passing game while failing to establish the run. Defensively, while the yardage totals look respectable, the high points allowed highlight problems with consistency and red-zone defense.
What to Watch
Turnovers have been a major storyline. Quarterback Jaxon Potter has thrown three interceptions this season, two of which came last week. Avoiding costly mistakes will be essential if Washington State wants to stop the skid.
Team Leaders
• Passing: Jaxon Potter – 604 yards, 4 TDs, 3 INTs
• Rushing: Kirby Vorhees – 132 yards on 30 carries
• Receiving: Josh Meredith – 15 receptions, 195 yards, 1 TD
Prediction
Washington State must take care of the football and get back to basics offensively. If the Cougars limit turnovers and keep Colorado State’s offense in check, they should have enough to right the ship.
Prediction: Washington State 28, Colorado State 10
