Boilermakers Hold Off FAU For 28-26 Win

The Purdue Boilermakers moved to .500 on the season defeating Florida Atlantic 28-26. Purdue (2-2) stopped FAU (2-3) from converting a two-point conversion to hold on for the victory. 

First string QB Aidan O’Connell missed the game with an undisclosed injury. Austin Burton got the start for Purdue. He finished 21/29 for 166 yards and three touchdowns. The running game was solid led by Dylan Downing’s 113 yards on 15 carries and a touchdown. Charlie Jones caught two of Burton’s touchdowns and had 59 yards, tied with Devin Mockobee for receiving yards on the day. Mockobee had four receptions while Jones had nine. Tj Sheffield had the other TD reception and finished with 22 yards on two catches.

On defense, Chris Jefferson returned an interception 55 yards for Purdue. He had three tackles to go along with the INT. Jacob Wahlberg had eight tackles and Kieren Douglas had seven to lead the Boilermakers. The Boilermakers won despite a 3/12 effort on third down and being outgained 419-354.

Purdue would cap off a 10 play, 77 yard drive when Jones found the end zone via a seven-yard Burton pass in the first quarter.After falling behind 13-7 in the second quarter, the Boilermakers would take the lead for good with 18 seconds left in the half when Jones caught his second touchdown pass from Burton, a 12-yarder to give Purdue a 14-13 lead.

Downing would score on a two-yard run in the third to give Purdue a 21-13 lead. After an FAU score, Purdue would answer back in the final quarter when Sheffield scored on a four-yard catch.  FAU would score with 5:21 left in the game but Purdue would hold them off the rest of the way.

Purdue: Will head to take on undefeated Minnesota next Saturday.

Florida Atlantic: Bye week then will face North Texas.
