ATLANTA, GA – On Saturday, September 19, 2020 at 03:30pm, Georgia Tech will take on University of Central Florida(14) at Bobby Dodd Stadium. The Yellow Jackets will be coming off a comeback win against Florida State last week.
Leading the Georgia Tech offense is true freshman Jeffrey Sims. This is the first time a true freshman has started a season opener since 2003 at Georgia Tech. Sims showed great potential as quarterback, as he managed to obtain 277 yards of passing 23/34 with a rushing touchdown. Sims showed his ability to be a dual threat moving the chains with his legs and he had 13 carries for 64 yards rushing. As a result, he led the Yellow Jackets to a 16-13 victory over the Seminoles. Sims was awarded the Manning Award Quarterback of the week and was also named ACC rookie of the week. Sims was previously committed to Florida State and in a last-minute decision he committed to Georgia Tech.
Jeffery Sims came out of Jackson, FL ranked as one of the top quarterbacks in the country. He was a three-year starting quarterback and during his tenure he had over 5000 passing yards and 55 touchdowns. Sims was rated as a 4-star prospect and ranked in the top 15 recruits in Georgia Tech history.
Sims will lead the Yellow Jackets this week against a high scoring offense in University of Central Florida led by Dillon Gabriel. UCF offense scored 43.4 points per game last season. This will present as a challenge for Sims and the Georgia Tech offense. The true freshman quarterback will have to come out fast and look to put points on the board right away. Minimizing turnovers will be crucial in this match-up. Sims will have to get the job done through the air and on his feet with a healthy mix to keep the UCF defense honest. Expect to see Georgia Tech open up the play book tailored to Jeffrey Sims strengths.
