Wednesday night, the Portland Timbers and LA Galaxy will meet at Providence Park in the fourth round of the US Open Cup. It is the third time in four years these two Western Conference opponents have met up in the fourth round of the Cup.
The teams have split a pair of results, with the Galaxy taking the first match in 2016. Last season, the Galaxy fell against the Timbers 1-0 in the round of 16 back in Portland. This years winner will have to face another team from the West, taking the winner of the LAFC vs San Jose Earthquakes match. The two winners will meet in the quarterfinals on July 10.
The Galaxy has a 35-18-0 record in the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup since their first appearance back in 1999. The Galaxy has won the tournament twice back in 2001 and 2005, additionally, they have reached the Open Cup Final on two other occasions in 2002 and 2006.
