MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — The College Football Playoff National Championship is set, as No. 10 Miami and No. 1 Indiana meet on January 19 at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN. Despite being listed as the visiting team, Miami will play the title game at its home venue, Hard Rock Stadium, adding a unique backdrop to college football’s biggest night.
Both programs arrive with vastly different paths, but each has earned its place on the sport’s grandest stage.
How Miami Got Here
Miami enters the championship game with a 13–2 record after answering every postseason question placed in front of it.
The Hurricanes opened the season with a statement win over then-No. 6 Notre Dame, followed by a 5–0 start that included dominant victories over then-No. 18 USF and then-No. 18 Florida State. Miami suffered its first setback in a narrow loss to Louisville before rebounding with a decisive win over Stanford. A late-season loss to SMU kept the Hurricanes out of the ACC Championship Game and fueled debate about their playoff résumé.
Miami settled that discussion decisively.
The Hurricanes opened the College Football Playoff with a 10–3 defensive battle against No. 7 Texas A&M on the road. They followed with a 24–14 upset of reigning national champion Ohio State in the Cotton Bowl, then survived a back-and-forth semifinal to defeat No. 6 Ole Miss in the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl, earning a spot in the national title game.
Indiana’s Unblemished Run
Indiana arrives undefeated at 15–0 and ranked No. 1 for the first time in program history. A victory would deliver the school’s first national championship.
The Hoosiers left little doubt throughout the regular season, highlighted by a 63–10 rout of then-No. 9 Illinois and a road win over then-No. 3 Oregon. Indiana capped the regular season by defeating previously unbeaten Ohio State 13–10 in the Big Ten Championship Game.
After a first-round bye, Indiana overwhelmed No. 9 Alabama 38–3 in the quarterfinals, then dismantled No. 5 Oregon 56–22 in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl to reach the championship game.
What to Watch
The matchup centers on whether Miami’s defense can slow down Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza and an Indiana offense operating at peak efficiency.
Mendoza has been nearly flawless in the postseason, completing 31 of 36 passes for 369 yards, eight touchdowns, and no interceptions in the College Football Playoff. His ability to distribute the ball while Indiana controls tempo has been a defining feature of the Hoosiers’ run.
Miami counters with a defense that has thrived under pressure throughout the playoff, forcing turnovers and limiting explosive plays against elite competition.
