Charlotte, NC – For over 10 years, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets were widely known for their triple-option offense. At times they’d look lethal and unstoppable and then at other times, they’d look out of date and behind the times. Since Georgia Tech head coach Geoff Collins’ first season on the job, they’ve begun the process of transitioning out of the triple-option offense and into a 21st century offense. However, like with anything that is around a long time, it can take awhile to get rid of but with Collins’ about to start his 3rd season, there are signs of improvement.
When asked about his thoughts on the team, an energetic Collins said, “It’s an exciting time. We got 14 new guys who came in January, the way the culture is set… just excited to work with them. Excited to be back in the classroom.”
Last season, Georgia Tech was a very young, but inconsistent team at best. They’d have flashes where they would look like an exciting team, potentially headed to a bowl game but then they’d have games or drives were they would sputter out and not be able to get anything going. Headed into this season, Collins spoke about how impressed he’s been with the young guys with the work they’ve put in and their development.
“The growth and development those guys have made in our program from January to now is astounding.” Collins added that “we’re excited where we are” in the development of the team, program and culture so far.
Though Georgia Tech finished 2020 with a record of 3-7, there were many factors like COVID-19, key injuries across multiple position groups and overall inexperience. Through it all, the Yellow Jackets did flash potential so if they’re able to improve in key areas like scoring in the red zone, they’ll have a chance to be a much better team. Yellow Jackets quarterback Jeff Sims spoke about that at ACC Kickoff in Charlotte.
“From an execution perspective, that’s just something we have to get better at,” said Sims. “That’s something we’ve worked on this offseason with different red zone drills and periods.”
Georgia Tech begins the season facing off against Northern Illinois at Bobby Dodd Stadium, on September 4th at 7PM EST.
