The Purdue Boilermakers (2–0) look to keep their unbeaten start alive when they open Big Ten play at home against the USC Trojans (2–0) on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET on CBS and Paramount+. This will be Purdue’s third straight home game, coming off a 34–17 win over Southern Illinois.
Purdue Defense Facing Big Test
The Boilermakers have been solid defensively through two weeks. They’ve allowed just 243 yards per game, ranking 28th nationally, and are giving up only 8.5 points per game, good for 13th in the FBS.
Up front, Purdue has been disruptive with seven sacks:
- CJ Nunnally IV leads with two.
- Jamarrion Harkless has 1.5.
- Mani Powell has one sack and ranks second on the team with seven tackles.
- Tahj Ra-El anchors the defense with 14 tackles.
- Charles Correa, Trey Smith, Breylon Charles, CJ Madden, and Sanders Ellis each have a half sack.
That unit will need to be at its best against a USC team averaging a staggering 676 total yards per game and 66 points per game, both first in the FBS.
Boilermakers’ Offensive Outlook
Quarterback Ryan Browne has been efficient, completing 32 of 49 passes for 481 yards, with four touchdowns and one interception. He’s also mobile, adding 55 rushing yards and a score, while being sacked just once.
Running back Devin Mockobee leads the ground game with 185 yards and three touchdowns on 46 carries. In the receiving corps:
- Arhamad Branch has been explosive with 132 yards and two touchdowns on just five catches.
- Michael Jackson III adds 79 yards and a touchdown on seven receptions.
- Nitro Tuggle has also found the end zone.
USC Offense Sets the Tone
The Trojans come in riding one of the most explosive offenses in college football. They lead the nation in both scoring and total offense, blending a fast-paced passing attack with a strong running game. Purdue’s defensive front will be challenged to pressure USC’s quarterback and disrupt rhythm before drives snowball into points.
Keys to the Game
- Purdue Pass Rush: Can the Boilermakers generate enough pressure to slow USC’s high-octane attack?
- Ball Control: Sustaining drives and leaning on Mockobee could help Purdue keep the Trojan offense on the sideline.
- Turnovers: Both teams will need to protect the football. A takeaway in key moments could swing momentum.
- USC Speed vs. Purdue Discipline: USC thrives on explosive plays; Purdue must limit breakdowns in the secondary.
Prediction
Purdue has a defense capable of frustrating opponents, but USC’s offense looks nearly unstoppable through two weeks. The Boilermakers will need near-perfect execution and big plays from Browne and Mockobee to keep pace. Expect Purdue to compete at home, but USC’s firepower may ultimately be too much.
Projected Final: USC 41, Purdue 24.
