Denver Broncos 2019 Draft Recap

Written by Brandon Clearwaters

After drafting Noah Fant in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft, the Denver Broncos entered day two of the draft. With the 41st overall pick, the Broncos selected offensive lineman Dalton Risner from Kansas State. Risner played at Kansas State from 2014 till 2018, where during his career he stated in 50 of 51 games.

Risner has been one of the top offensive linemen in the country. In his 2018 season, he helped the Wildcats, by averaging 208.06 yards and 2.3 rushing touchdowns per game. Risner brings high leadership skills to the Broncos team. Risner is very physical but has a very controlled style of play. Risner has a long resume of awards he has received during his time at Kansas State, some include being named 2018 Big 12 Offensive Lineman of the Year, as well as the Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year Finalist.

After the Broncos selected Dalton Risner at the 41st overall draft selection, they were slated to pick again at the 52nd overall pick. A Draft pick they acquired from the Steelers from a trade. They elected to use this selection along with their fourth-round pick, and their six-round pick in order to move up to the 42nd overall pick in the draft.

With the 42nd selection in the 2019 NFL Draft, they selected quarterback Drew Lock from Missouri. The Broncos have shown interest in Lock for a long time. Lock brings everything I think the Broncos are looking for in a developmental quarterback.  Lock has the throwing and arm talent, natural athletic ability and a strong football IQ, as well as high leadership qualities. I believe that Lock has what it takes to be a franchise quarterback in the NFL, and with time and development, the Broncos made the right decision in drafting Lock.

After going offensive with their top three selections in the draft the Broncos used their third-round pick 71st overall to help their Defensive line. With the 71st selection, the Broncos drafted Dre’ Mont Jones from Ohio State. Jones is not your typical defensive lineman, Jones has very strong and quick hands that allow him to create havoc in the backfield. Jones also brings his athleticism and ability to rush the quarterback. In his 2018 season, he put up 13 tackles for a loss.

The Broncos looked to continue to add to their defensive line with their fifth-round pick 156th overall and selected Oregon Edge Rusher, Justin Hollins. During the NFL combine Hollins ran a 4.51-second 40-yard dash and has a vertical jump of 36.5 inches. In his three years as a starter for the Ducks, Hollins racked up 14 sacks, 36 tackles for a loss and forced 7 fumbles and knocked down 8 passes. Hollins is a very explosive athlete who will threaten tackles off the snap. With this being said there are some things Hollins will need to work on during his time with the Broncos. He needs to get stronger and needs to develop more rush moves to be more efficient.

The Broncos final pick in the 2019 Draft they selected Wide Receiver Juwann Winfree from Colorado. Winfree brings the ability to be a solid route runner who can catch contested catches, and is a terrific blocker for receivers. With his size and ability being 6′ 3″ and 230-lbs he is able to use his size and explosive power and make the necessary plays in tight spaces. Winfree didn’t really get to showcase his ability to play during his time at Colorado because of a torn ACL injury he suffered in 2016.

I would have to say overall the Broncos were able to stack up another great draft class. It seems that John Elway had now been able to figure out how to draft players and make special things happen for the Broncos.
